A Master Engineer

“The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings' palaces” (Proverbs 30:28).

ost of you who will read this article have seen large beautiful spider webs, loaded with dewdrops and sparkling like diamonds in the morning sun. Perhaps you did not pay them any attention, but the spider and its web is a testimony of one way we can see the power and glory of God’s creation. The spider (along with millions and millions of other wonders) affirms the existence of an all powerful and eternal God.

It is a fact that the Bible proclaims the reality and existence of God. However, there are millions who do not believe the Bible. They have chosen to play the part of a fool (Psalms 14:1), and to place their faith in myths and theories of men rather than in God. But to refuse belief in God is not only to deny the biblical account of Him, but also to deny all the wonders of His creation!

The Spider’s Testimony

Take a brief look at the spider, one of God’s Master Engineers. The web it weaves (over night) is truly a wonder. The spider manufactures the silk (made of protein) needed for this kings’ palace. Since various types are essential for the job, it is able to produce five or more kinds of silk. We may take our hands and easily break through the web, but we are told that this silk is the strongest natural fiber known to man.

Before construction begins, there are several decisions to be made. This little creature must decide the right location for the web. It must choose the proper parallel limbs having the right distance apart to accommodate the size and strength of the web. Where does the spider get its plan for building? The blueprint that it follows is tucked away in the spider’s natural ability that was given to it by its Creator.

Let The Work Begin

Once the foundation strands are completed, the skillful spider begins weaving the proper design and pattern for the web. Its major concern is to produce a web that is capable of catching and holding insects to be used for food. Perhaps you want to ask, “Why doesn’t it get caught in its own web?” Because it has a special oil on its body that prevents this from happening. God also designed the spider with hooked claws that are capable of grasping the silk threads.

Please keep in mind that this small creature accomplishes all this work, pattern, design, and skill in only a few hours. Therefore, how can anyone see the spider skillfully grasping with its hands (as it builds a kings’ palace), and not believe that:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
