CHAPTER 26

Plans Are Made to Kill Jesus

Parallel: Mark 14:1,2; Luke 22:1-6; John 11:45-57

Matt. 26:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples,

Matt. 26:2 "You know that after two days is the 1Feast of the Passover, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to be crucified."

1Mark 14:1 After two days was the feast of the Passover, and the feast of Unleavened bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by deception, and put Him to death.

1Luke 22:1 Now the feast of Unleavened bread drew near, which is called the Passover.

Matt. 26:3 Then the 1chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people, assembled together at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

1John 11:47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we to do? For this Man does many miracles."

1John 11:49-52 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said to them, "You know nothing at all; nor do you consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish."  And this he did not speak of his own accord, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation, and not for that nation only, but that also He should gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

Matt. 26:4 And consulted how they might take Jesus by 1subtlety, and 2kill Him.

1Mark 14:1 After two days was the Passover, and the feast of Unleavened bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by deception, and put Him to death.

2Luke 22:2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.

Matt. 26:5 But they said, "Not during the 1feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people."

1John 11:54-57 Therefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but went from there to a country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there continued with His disciples. And the Passover of the Jews was near at hand, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That He will not come to the feast?" Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any one knew where He was, he should report it, that they might take Him.

Jesus' Anointing at Bethany

Parallel:  Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8

Matt. 26:6 Now when Jesus was in 1Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

1John 12:1,2 Then six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.

Matt. 26:7 There came to Him a 1woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as He sat at meat.

1John 12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

1Mark 14:3 And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on His head.

Matt. 26:8 But when His 1disciples saw it, they had 2indignation, saying, "To what purpose is this waste?

1John 12:4 Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who should betray Him, said,

2Mark 14:4 And there were some who had indignation within themselves, and said, "Why was the ointment thus wasted?"

Matt. 26:9 For this 1ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the 2poor."

1Mark 14:5  "For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor." And they murmured against her.

1John 12:5,6  "Why was not this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and used to take what was put in it.

2John 13:29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the money bag, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things that we need for the feast," or, that he should give something to the poor.

Matt. 26:10 When Jesus understood it, He said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me."

Matt. 26:11 For you have the poor with you always, but Me you will not have always.

Matt. 26:12 For in that she has poured this ointment on My body, she did it for My 1burial.

1Mark 14:8 She has done what she could; she has come beforehand to anoint My body for burying.

Matt. 26:13 Verily I say to you, wherever this 1gospel will be preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told for a memorial of her.

1Mark 14:9 Verily I say to you, wherever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.

Judas Bargains to Betray Jesus

Parallel:  Mark 14:10,11; Luke 22:3-6; John 13:2

Matt. 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called 1Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,

1Luke 22:3,4 Then Satan entered into Judas surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. And he went his way, and discussed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.

Matt. 26:15 And said to them, "What will you 1give me, if I deliver Him to you?" And 2they counted out for him 3thirty pieces of silver.

1Mark 14:10,11 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray Him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.

2Luke 22:5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.

3Zechariah 11:12 And I said to them, "If you think good, give me my price; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my price thirty pieces of silver.

Matt. 26:16 And from that time he sought opportunity to 1betray Him.

1Luke 22:6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus/Disciples Celebrate Passover

Parallel:  Mark 14:12-21; Luke 22:7-13

Matt. 26:17 Now on the first day of the feast of 1Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do you want us to go to prepare for You to eat the Passover?"

1Mark 14:12 And the first day of Unleavened bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?"

1 Luke 22:7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb must be killed.

Matt. 26:18 And He said, 1"Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, "The Master says, 'My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.' "

1Mark 14:13-15 And He sent out two of His disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and you will meet a man bearing a pitcher of water: Follow him. And wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, 'The Master said, where is the guest-chamber, where I will eat the Passover with My disciples?' And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared; there make ready for us."

1Luke 22:8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat."

1Luke 22:10-12 And He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, there a man will meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters. And you will say to the goodman of the house, 'The Master says to you, "Where is the guest room, in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?" And he will show you a large furnished upper room; there make ready."

Matt. 26:19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them, and they made ready the Passover.

Matt. 26:20 Now when the evening had come, He sat down with the twelve.

Matt. 26:21 And as they ate, He said, "Verily I say to you, that one of you will betray Me."

Matt. 26:22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and began each of them to say to Him, "Lord, is it I?"

Matt. 26:23 And He answered and said, "He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, will 1betray Me.

1John 13:21-30 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, "Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me." Then the disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom He spoke. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to Him, that he should ask who it was of whom He spoke. He then leaning back on Jesus' breast said to Him, "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "He it is he, to whom I shall give a piece of bread, when I have dipped it." And when He had dipped the piece of bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And after the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, "What you do, do quickly." Now no man at the table knew for what reason He spoke this to him. For some of them thought, because Judas had the money bag, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things that we need for the feast," or, that he should give something to the poor. He then having received the piece of bread went out immediately. And it was night.

Matt. 26:24 The Son of Man 1goes as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had 2not been born."

1Luke 22:22 And truly the Son of Man goes, as it was determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!

2Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Matt. 26:25 Then Judas, who betrayed Him, answered and said, "Master, is it I?" He said to him, "You have said it."

Jesus Instituted the Lord's Supper

Parallel:  Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-23

Matt. 26:26 And as they were eating, 1Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the 2disciples, and said, "Take, 3eat; this is My body."

11 Corinthians 11:23,24 For I have received of the Lord that which I also delivered you; that the Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

2Luke 22:14,15 And when the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer:"

3Luke 22:18,19 For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God comes." And He took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me."

Matt. 26:27 And He took the 1cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

1Luke 22:17 And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves;

1Luke 22:20 Likewise also He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you."

1Mark 14:23 And He took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank of it.

Matt. 26:28 For this is My blood of the 1new testament, which is shed for many for the 2remission of sins.

1Jeremiah 31:31 "Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah."

1Hebrews 8:8-13 For finding fault with them, He says, "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put My laws in their mind, and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be My people. And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more." In that he says, "A new covenant," He has made the first old. Now that which decays and is growing old is ready to vanish away.

1Luke 22:20 Likewise also He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you."

2Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

21 Corinthians 11:24 And when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me."

Matt. 26:29 But I say to you, I will not 1drink from now on of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's 2kingdom."

1Luke 22:18 "For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God comes."

1Mark 14:25 "Verily I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."

21 Corinthians 11:23-30 For I have received of the Lord that which I also delivered to you; that the Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "Take, eat: this is My body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." After the same manner He also took the cup, when He had supped, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood. This do, as, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you do show the Lord's death until He comes. Therefore whoever eats this bread, or drinks this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he who eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

Matt. 26:30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

Parallel:  Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-34; John 13:36-38

Matt. 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be offended because of Me this night, for it is 1written,  'I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered abroad.'

1Zechariah 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, and against the man who is My fellow, says the LORD of hosts. Smite the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn My hand against the little ones."

Matt. 26:32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee."

Matt. 26:33 Peter answered and said to Him, "Even though all men will be offended because of You, yet I will never be offended."

Matt. 26:34 Jesus said to him, "Verily I say to you, that 1this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."

1Mark 14:30 And Jesus said to him, "Verily I say to you, that this day, even in this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times."

1Luke 22:34 And He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, before you will deny three times that you know Me."

Matt. 26:35 Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to 1die with You, yet I will not deny You."  And so said all the disciples.

1John 13:37 Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."

Jesus Prays In Gethsemane

Parallel:  Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46; cf. John 18:1-11

Matt. 26:36 Then came Jesus with them to a place called 1Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray."

1John 18:1,2 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples across the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas also, who betrayed Him, knew the place; for Jesus often resorted there with His disciples.

Matt. 26:37 And He took with him 1Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

1Mark 14:33 And he took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly distressed, and to be very heavy;

Matt. 26:38 Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Tarry here, and watch with Me."

Matt. 26:39 And He went a little farther, and fell on His face, and 1prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless not as I will, but as 2You will."

1Luke 22:41 And He was withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down, and prayed,

1Mark 14:35,36  And He went a little forward, and fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to You; take away this cup from Me; nevertheless not what I will, but what You will."

2Luke 22:43 And there appeared an angel to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.

Matt. 26:40 And He came to the disciples, and found them 1asleep, and said to Peter, "What, could you not watch with Me one hour?

1Mark 14:37 And He came and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?"

Matt. 26:41 Watch and pray, that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Matt. 26:42 He went away again the second time, and 1prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Your will be done."

1Luke 22:44 And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Matt. 26:43 And He came and found them 1asleep again; for their eyes were heavy.

1Luke 22:45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

1Mark 14:40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.

Matt. 26:44   And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Matt. 26:45 Then He came to 1His disciples, and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

1Mark 14:41 And He came the third time, and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough, 1the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

1John 13:37 Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."

Matt. 26:46 Rise, let us be going.  Behold, he who 1betrays Me is at hand."

1John 18:2 And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; for Jesus often resorted there with His disciples.

1Mark 14:42 "Rise up, let us go; lo, he who betrays Me is at hand."

Betrayal/Arrest in Gethsemane

Parallel:  Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-11

Matt. 26:47 And while He spoke, lo, 1Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

1Mark 14:43 And immediately, while He was speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

1John 18:3-5 Then Judas, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon Him, went forward, and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them," I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.

Matt. 26:48 Now he who betrayed Him gave them a 1sign, saying, "Whomever I will kiss, He is the one; hold Him fast."

1Mark 14:44 And he who betrayed Him had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I will kiss, He is the one; take Him, and lead Him away safely."

Matt. 26:49 And going at once he came to Jesus, and said, 1"Hail, 2Master, and kissed Him.

1John 18:6-8 As soon as He had said to them, "I am He," they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore if you seek Me, let these go their way,"

2Luke 22:48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

Matt. 26:50 And Jesus said to Him, 1"Friend, why have you come?"  Then they came and 2laid hands on Jesus, and took Him,

1Psalms 41:9 Yes, even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

2Luke 22:49 When those who were around Him saw what would follow, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"

Matt. 26:51 And, behold, 1one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his 2sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

1John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

2Luke 22:36 Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a purse, let him take it along, and likewise a bag, and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one."

2Luke 22:38 And they said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough."

2Luke 22:50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

Matt. 26:52 Then said 1Jesus to him, "Put up again your sword into its place, for all who take the 2sword will perish with the sword.

1Luke 22:51 And Jesus answered and said, "Permit Me to do this." And He touched his ear, and healed him.

2John 18:11 Then said Jesus to Peter, "Put up your sword into the sheath. Shall I not the cup which My Father has given Me, to drink?"

Matt. 26:53 Do you not think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels?

Matt. 26:54 But how then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that say it must be."

Matt. 26:55 In that same hour Jesus said to the 1multitudes, "Have you come out as against a thief with swords and staves to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hold on Me.

1Luke 22:52,53 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple, and the elders, who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a thief, with swords and clubs? When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."

Matt. 26:56 But all this was done, that the 1Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled.

1Matthew 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be offended because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered abroad.'"

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

Parallel:  Mark 14:53-65; Luke 22:66-71; John 18:12-24

Matt. 26:57 And those who had laid hold on Jesus led Him away to 1Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

1Mark 14:53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with Him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.

Matt. 26:58 But 1Peter followed Him afar off to the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

1Mark 14:54 And Peter followed Him afar off, even to the palace of the high priest. And he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

Matt. 26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put Him to death,

Matt. 26:60 but found none. Even though many 1false witnesses came, yet they found none.  At last two false witnesses came forward,

1Mark 14:56 For many bare false witness against Him, but their witness did not agreed.

Matt. 26:61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the 1temple of God, and rebuild it in three days.'"

1Mark 14:58,59 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.' "  But neither then did their witness agree.

Matt. 26:62 And the high priest arose, and said to Him, "Do you answer nothing?  What is this which these witnesses are bringing against You?"

Matt. 26:63 But Jesus held His peace. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God."

Matt. 26:64 Jesus said to him, "You have said, nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you will see the 1Son of Man 2sitting on the right hand of power, and 3coming in the clouds of heaven."

1Mark 14:62 And Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."

2Acts 1:9 And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

2Acts 7:55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

21 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.

3Revelation 1:7 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye shall see Him; and they also who pierced Him; and all tribes of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Matt. 26:65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy!  What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard His blasphemy.

Matt. 26:66 What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is guilty of death."

Matt. 26:67 Then they 1spit in His face, and buffeted Him; and others slapped Him with the palms of their hands,

1Mark 14:65 And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His face, and to strike Him, and to say to Him, "Prophesy! And the servants struck Him with the palms of their hands.

1Luke 22:55,56 And when they kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and had sat down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid seeing him as he sat by the fire, and looking at him earnestly said, "This man was also with Him."

1Luke 22:59 And after about one hour, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Of a truth this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."

1John 18:26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"

Matt. 26:74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man." And immediately a 1rooster crowed.

1Luke 22:60 And Peter said, "Man, I know not what you are saying." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

Matt. 26:75 And Peter 1remembered the word of Jesus, who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

1Luke 22:61 And the Lord turned, and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."

1Mark 14:72 And the second time the rooster crowed. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And when he thought about this, he wept.

Jesus Before Pilate

Parallel:  Mark 15:1-5; Luke 23:1-5; John 18:28-38

Matt. 27:11 And Jesus stood before the 1governor and the governor asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "It is so."

1Mark 15:1 And immediately in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation; and bound Jesus, and led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.

1John 18:28-30 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment, and it was early.  But they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. Pilate then went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?" They answered and said to him, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you."

Matt. 27:12 And when He was 1accused by the 2chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.

1Mark 15:3 And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.

2John 18:31,32 Then said Pilate to them, "You take Him, and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death," that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.

Matt. 27:13 Then said Pilate to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they 1witness against You?"

1Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."

Matt. 27:14 And He answered him not one word, so that the 1governor marveled greatly.

1Luke 23:3,4 And Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "It is as You say." Then Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, "I find no fault in this Man."

1Luke 23:6-12 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also at Jerusalem at that time. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad; for he had desired to see Him for a long time, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. And Herod with his men of war treated Him with contempt, and mocked Him, and arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. And the same day Pilate and Herod became good friends, for before they had been at enmity with each other.

Give Us Barabbas!

Parallel:  Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:13-25; John 18:39,40

Matt. 27:15 Now at that feast the governor was accustomed to 1releasing to the people a 2prisoner, whom they chose.

1John 18:39 "But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. Will you therefore have me release to you the King of the Jews?"

2Luke 23:13-15 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who mistreats the people. And, behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things which you accuse Him. No, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and, indeed, nothing worthy of death has done to Him.

Matt. 27:16 And they had then a notorious prisoner, called 1Barabbas.

1Mark 15:7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was bound with those who had made insurrection with him; who had committed murder in the insurrection.

1John 18:40 Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.

Matt. 27:17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Which one do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

Matt. 27:18 For he knew that it was for1 envy that they had delivered Him.

1Proverbs 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh, but envy the rottenness of the bones.

1James 3:16 For where envying and strife exist, there is confusion and every evil work.

Matt. 27:19 While he was sitting down on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him."

Matt. 27:20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas, and 1destroy Jesus.

1Acts 3:14 But you denied the Holy One and Just, One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you;

1Acts 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecuted? And they have slain those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,

Matt. 27:21 The governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you? "They said, "Barabbas."

Matt. 27:22 1Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all say to him, 2"Let Him be crucified."

1Acts 3:13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Son Jesus; whom you delivered up, and denied Him in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to let Him go.

2John 18:39,40 "But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. Will you therefore have me release to you the King of the Jews?"  Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.

Matt. 27:23 And the governor said, 1"Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"

1Luke 23:22 And he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no cause of death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him, and let Him go."

1Luke 23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

Matt. 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, "His 1blood be on us, and on our children.

1Joshua 2:19 And it shall be, that whoever shall go out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be guiltless. And whoever shall be with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand is laid on him.

1Hebrews 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.

1Luke 23:25 And he released to them the one whom they had desired, who for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

2Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

Jesus Is Mocked by the Soldiers

Parallel:  Mark 15:16-20; Luke 22:63-65; John 19:1-4

Matt. 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered to him the whole band of 1soldiers.

1Mark 15:16 And the soldiers led Him away to the hall, called Praetorium, and they call together the whole band.

Matt. 27:28 And 1they stripped Him, and put on him a scarlet robe,

1John 19:1 Therefore Pilate took Jesus, and scourged Him.

1Mark 15:17 And they clothed Him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it on His head,

Matt. 27:29 and when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a 1reed in His right hand, and they bowed the knee before Him, and 2mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

1Luke 22:64 And when they had blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face, and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is it who struck You?"

2Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteemed Him.

Matt. 27:30 And they 1spit on Him, and took the reed,  and struck Him on the head.

1Luke 22:65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

1Matthew 26:67 Then they spit in His face, and beat Him; and others slapped Him with the palms of their hands,

Matt. 27:31 And after they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, and put His own raiment on Him, and led Him away to be 1crucified.

1Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.

God's Son on the Cross

Parallel:  Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43; John 19:17-24

Matt. 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of 1Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.

1John 19:17 And He bearing His cross went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha,

1Mark 15:21 And they compel Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who passed by, coming out of the country, to bear His cross.

1Luke 23:26 And as they led Him away, they laid hold of one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him, that he might bear it after Jesus.

Matt. 27:33 And when they had come to a 1place called Golgotha, that is to say, a 2place of a skull,

1Luke 23:27-31 And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus turning said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts which never nursed.' Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.' For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?"

2John 19:17 And He bearing His cross went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha,

2Luke 23:33,34 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they parted his clothing, and cast lots.

Matt. 27:34 they gave Him 1vinegar to drink mingled with gall to drink and when He had tasted it, He would not drink.

1John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, says," I thirst."

1Mark 15:23 And they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not received it.

Matt. 27:35 And they crucified Him, and parted His 1garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, "They 2divided My garments among them, and on My clothing they cast lots."

1Mark 15:24,25 And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

1John 19:23-27 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also His coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top to bottom. They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots."  Therefore the soldiers did these things. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

2Psalms 22:18 They divide My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.

Matt. 27:36 And sitting down they kept watch over Him there.

Matt. 27:37 And they set over His head His accusation written, 1THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

1John 19:19-22 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it to the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am King of the Jews.'" Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

Matt. 27:38 Then two 1thieves were crucified with Him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

1Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Matt. 27:39 And those who passed by 1reviled Him, wagging their heads,

11 Peter 2:23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile again; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;

1Psalms 22:7,8 All those who see Me, laugh Me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, "He trusted in the LORD that He would deliver Him; let Him deliver Him, seeing He delights in Him."

Matt. 27:40 and saying, "You who destroy the 1temple, and build it in three days, save Yourself!  If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

1Matthew 26:61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and rebuild  it in three days.'"

Matt. 27:41 Likewise the chief priests also mocking Him, with the scribes and elders, said,

Matt. 27:42 "He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the 1King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

1Mark 15:32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." And those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

Matt. 27:43 He 1trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'

1Psalms 22:8  "He trusted in the LORD that He would deliver Him; let Him deliver Him, seeing He delights in Him."

Matt. 27:44 The 1thieves also, who were crucified with Him, also cast the same insult in His teeth.

1Mark 15:32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." And those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

1Luke 23:39-43 And one of the criminals who were hanged there hurled abuse at Him, saying, "If You are Christ, save Yourself and us." But the other answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing amiss." And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Verily I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise."

Matt. 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was 1darkness over all the land to the ninth hour.

1Luke 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

Matt. 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" —that is to say, 1My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?"

1Psalms 22:1  "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?"

Matt. 27:47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This man calls for Elijah."

Matt. 27:48 And immediately one of them ran, and got a sponge, and filled it with 1vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave Him to drink.

1John 19:28,29 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, says, "I thirst." Now there was set there a vessel full of vinegar; and they filled a sponge with vinegar, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.

1Psalms 69:21 They gave Me also gall for my food, and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink.

Matt. 27:49 The rest said, "Let be, let us see whether 1Elijah will come to save Him."

1Mark 15:36 And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave Him to drink, saying, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down."

Matt. 27:50 Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, 1yielded up His spirit.

1John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, "It is finished!"  And bowing His head, and gave up His spirit.

1Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, He said, "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit." And having said this, He breathed His last.

1Luke 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

2Hebrews 9:7,8 But into the second part the high priest alone went once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people.  The Holy Spirit signifying, this that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing;

2Ephesians 2:11-13 Therefore remember, that in time past you were Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by who is called the Circumcision, made in the flesh by hands—that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who were formerly far off have been made near by the blood of Christ.

2Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters into that within the veil,

Matt. 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who slept arose,

Matt. 27:53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

Matt. 27:54 Now when the 1centurion, and those with him were watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying,  "Truly this was the Son of God!"

1Luke 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man."

Matt. 27:55 And many 1women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there beholding afar off,

1Luke 24:10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.

1Mark 15:40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome,

Buried In Joseph's Tomb

Parallel: Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42

Matt. 27:57 When the evening had come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named 1Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.

1Mark 15:42,43 And when the evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, an honorable counsellor, who also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

1Luke 23:50,51 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, and he was a good man, and just man. The same had not consented to their counsel and deed of them. He was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

1John 19:38 And after this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

Matt. 27:58 He went to 1Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

1Mark 15:43-44 Joseph of Arimathea, an honorable counsellor, who also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.  And Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and calling to him the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.

Matt. 27:59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he 1wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

1John 19:39,40 Nicodemus also, who at the first came to Jesus by night, came and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burying custom of the Jews.

Matt. 27:60 and laid it in his own new 1tomb, that he had hewn out of the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.

1John 19:41,42 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, where no one had ever laid. Therefore there they laid Jesus because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was close at hand.

1Luke 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn into the stone, where no one yet had been laid.

Matt. 27:61 And there was 1Mary Magdalene, and the 2other Mary, sitting over against the tomb.

1Mark 15:47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where He was laid.

2Luke 23:55,56 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how His body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and perfumes. And rested on the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

Matt. 27:65 Pilate said to them, "You have a watch; go your way, make it as sure as you can."

Matt. 27:66  So they went, and made the tomb sure, sealing the stone, and setting aguard.

CHAPTER 28

The Resurrection

Parallel: Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10

Matt. 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as the 1first day of the week began to dawn, 2Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.

2Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain others with them, came to the tomb, bringing the spices, which they had prepared.

2Mark 16:1,2 And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him. And very early in the morning on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb at the rising of the sun.

2John 20:1-18 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him. Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and came to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple did outran Peter, and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came following him, and went into the tomb, and saw the linen cloths lying there, and the napkin, that had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came first to the tomb, went in also,  and he saw, and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. But Mary stood weeping outside at the tomb, and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb.  And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. And when she had said this, she turned herself around, and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?" She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned herself, and said to Him, "Rabboni!"  (which is to say, Master). Jesus said to her, "Do not touch Me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to My brethren, and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father, and your Father, and to My God, and your God.'" Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

1Mark 16:3,4 And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large.

Matt. 28:6 He is not here; for 1He is risen, as He said. Come; see the place where the Lord lay.

1Luke 24:5,6 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how he spoke to you when He was yet in Galilee,"

1Mark 16:5,6  And entering into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were afraid. And he said to them, "Be not afraid: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him.

Matt. 28:7 And go quickly, and 1tell His disciples that 2He is risen from the dead, and, behold, He goes before you to Galilee; there will you see Him.  Behold, I have told you."

1Mark 16:8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. Neither did they say anything to anyone, for they were afraid.

Matt. 28:14 And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you."

Matt. 28:15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught, and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

The Great Commission

Parallel:  Mark 16:14-20; Luke 24:44-49

Matt. 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into 1Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

1Matthew 26:32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.

11 Corinthians 15:3-5 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen of Cephas, then by the twelve.

1Luke 24:34 Saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon."

1Mark 16:12,13 After that He appeared in another form to two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them.

1Luke 24:13-32 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they conversed and reasoned together, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were prevented so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, "What manner of conversation are you having with one another, as you walk, and are sad?" And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering and said to Him, "Are You only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which happened there in these days?" And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we trusted that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. And besides all this, today is the third day since these things were done. Yes, and certain women of our company who were early at the tomb, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see." Then He said to them, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. And they drew near to the village, where they were going, and He acted as though He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them. And it came to pass, as He sat at meat with them, He took bread, and blessed it, and broke, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said one to another, "Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us on the way, and while He opened the Scriptures?"

11 Corinthians 15:5 And that He was seen of Cephas, then by the twelve.

1Mark 16:14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven as they sat at meat, and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.

1John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be to you."

1John 20:24-29 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Except I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." And after eight days His disciples were again within, and Thomas was with them. Then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace be to you!"  Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and see My hands; and reach your hand here, and place it into My side. And do not be faithless, but believing." And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God." Jesus said to Him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed."

1John 21:1-14 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias, and in this way showed he Himself. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are also going with you." They went out, and immediately entered into a boat; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any meat?" They answered Him, "No." And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. "Therefore they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in for the multitude of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter," It is the Lord." Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his fisher's coat around him, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little boat; (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. As soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have now caught." Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, yet the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, "Come and dine." And none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" —knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came, and took the bread, and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. This is now the third time that Jesus showed Himself to His disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

11 Corinthians 15:6-8 After that, He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, He was seen by James, then of all the apostles. And last of all He was seen by me also, as to one born out of due time.

1Luke 24:50-51 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

1Acts 1:9,10 And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

1Acts 9:3-5 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shone around him a light from heaven. And he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the pricks."

1Acts 22:6-10 And it came to pass, that as I made my journey, and came near Damascus about noon, suddenly a great light shone from heaven around me. And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?' And I answered, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.' And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Arise, and go into Damascus; and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.'

Matt. 28:17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some 1doubted.

1John 20:24,25 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Except I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe."

And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

1Acts 23:11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, "Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for Me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome."

And he also removed even Maachah his grandmother, from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove. And Asa destroyed her idol, and burned it by the Brook Kidron. 22 Kings 8:16-19 And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign. He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD. Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah for the sake of David his servant, as he promised him, to give him and his children a light forever.

22 Chronicles 21:1-7 Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his place.  And he had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, and Jehiel, Zechariah, Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and gold, and precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn. Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself and slew all his brothers with the sword, and also others of the princes of Israel. Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just like the house of Ahab did, for he had the daughter of Ahab as a wife; and he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD. However, the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a light to him and to his sons forever.

32 Kings 15:1-4 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king. He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done, except that the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

32 Chronicles 26:1-5 Now all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah. He built Elath and restored it to Judah, after the king rested with his fathers. Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.

32 Kings 8:24-27 And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead. In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri, king of Israel. And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as the house of Ahab, for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.

32 Kings 11:1-3 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons who were being murdered; and they hid him and his nurse in the bedroom, from Athaliah, so that he was not killed. So he was hidden with her in the house of the LORD for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

32 Kings 12:1-12 In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign, and he reigned forty years he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba. And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him. But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places. And Jehoash said to the priests, "All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one who passes the account, the money of every man's assessment, and all the money that comes into any man's heart to bring into the house of the LORD, let the priests take it to themselves, every man of his acquaintance, and let them repair the breaches of the house, wherever any breach shall be found. But it was so, that by the twenty-third year of king Jehoash, the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house. Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said to them, "Why did you not repair the breaches of the house? Now therefore, receive no more money from your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house. And the priests consented to receive no more money from the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house. But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the LORD. And the priests who kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD. And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and counted the money that was found in the house of the LORD. And they gave the money, being counted, into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the LORD. And they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, who worked on the house of the LORD. And to masons, and stone cutters, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.

32 Kings 14:1,2 In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, reigned Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

Matt. 1:9 And Uzziah begot 1Jotham; and Jotham begot Ahaz; and Ahaz begot 2Hezekiah;

12 Kings 15:32-38 In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, began Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jerusha, the daughter of Zadok. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD; he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done. However the high places were not removed; the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of the LORD. Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah. And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David his father. And Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

12 Chronicles 27:1-9 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did. However, he did not enter into the temple of the LORD. And the people still did corruptly. He built much on the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel. Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers. He fought also with the king of the Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of Ammon gave him in the same year one hundred talents of silver, ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of Ammon pay to him, both the second and the third year. So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God. Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David. And Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

22 Kings 18:1-3 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abi, the daughter of Zechariah. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.

22 Chronicles 29:1,2 Hezekiah began to reign when he was twenty-five years old, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.

Matt. 1:10 And Hezekiah begot 1Manasseh; and Manasseh begot 2Amon; and Amon begot 3Josiah;

12 Kings 21:1-9 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hephzibah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. For he built up again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed, and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove, as did Ahab king of Israel; and he worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them. And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "In Jerusalem I will put my name." And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards. He did much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger. And he set a graven image of the grove that he had made in the house, of which the LORD said to David, and to Solomon his son, "In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever; neither will I make the feet of Israel move anymore out of the land which I gave their fathers; only if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them." But they did not hearken, and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than the nations did whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

12 Chronicles  33:1-10  Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem: But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down; he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven and served them. Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, where the LORD had said, "In Jerusalem shall my name be forever."  And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger. And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever; neither will I anymore remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses." So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel. And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they would not listen.

22 Kings 21:19-26 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh did. And he walked in all the ways that his father had walked, and served the idols that his father served, and worshipped them. And he forsook the LORD God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of the LORD. And the servants of Amon conspired against him, and slew the king in his own house. And the people of the land slew all those who had conspired against king Amon. And the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place. Now the rest of the acts of Amon, which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And he was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza.  And Josiah his son reigned in his place.

22 Chronicles 33:21-25 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem. But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father.  For Amon sacrificed to all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them.  And he did not humble himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house. But the people of the land slew all those who  had conspired against king Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

32 Kings 22:1,2 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the ways of David his father; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

32 Chronicles 34:1,2 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father; he declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

Matt. 1:11 And Josiah begot 1Jeconiah and his brothers, about the time they were 2carried away to Babylon:

12 Kings 24:6-16 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place. And the king of Egypt did not come out of his land anymore, for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt. Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother's name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done. At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants besieged it. And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, along with his mother, his servants, his princes, and his officers; and the king of Babylon took him prisoner in the eighth year of his reign. And he carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said. And he carried away into captivity all Jerusalem: all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained, except the poorest sort of the people of the land. And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those he carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all who were strong and fit for war, these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

12 Chronicles 36:8,9 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. And Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place. Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

22 Kings 24:14-16 And he carried away into captivity all Jerusalem: all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained, except the poorest sort of the people of the land. And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all who were strong and fit
