CHAPTER 21

Triumphal Entry

Parallel:  Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19

Matt. 21:1 And when they came near to Jerusalem, and came to 1Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

1Mark 11:1 And when they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,

1Luke 19:29 And it came to pass, when He had come near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples,

Matt. 21:2 saying to them, "Go into the 1village over against you, and immediately you will find a 2donkey tied, and a colt with her.  Loose them, and bring them to Me.

1Mark 11:2 And said to them, "Go your way into the village opposite you; and as soon as you are entered into it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it, and bring it."

2John 12:14 And Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

Matt. 21:3 And if any man says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."

Matt. 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the 1prophet, saying,

1Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King comes to you. He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey.

1Isaiah 62:11 Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the world: 'Say to the daughter of Zion, "Behold, your salvation comes. Behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him.

Matt. 21:5 "Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your King comes to you, meek, and sitting upon a 1donkey, and a colt the foal of a donkey.' "

1Mark 11:2 And said to them, "Go your way into the village opposite you; and as soon as you are entering into it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it, and bring it."

1Luke 19:30 Saying, "Go ye into the village opposite you, in which at your entering you will find a colt tied, on which yet no one has ever sat; loose him, and bring him here."

Matt. 21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,

Matt. 21:7 And brought the donkey, and the 1colt, and laid their clothes on them and they set Him on them.

1Mark 11:5-7 And certain of those who stood there said to them, "What are you doing loosing the colt?" And they said to them just as Jesus had commanded. And they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and threw their garments on it, and He sat on it.

1Luke 19:33-35 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, "Why are you loosing the colt?" And they said, "The Lord has need of him." And they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their garments on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.

Matt. 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments on the way; others cut 1branches from the trees, and spread them on the way.

1John 12:13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried, "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!"

Matt. 21:9 And the 1multitudes who went before, and those who followed, cried, saying, 2"Hosanna to the Son of 3David! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!' Hosanna in the highest!"

1Luke 19:37-40 And when He was come near, even at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!" And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said to Him, "Master, rebuke Your disciples." And He answered and said to them, "I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out."

2Psalms 118:25 Save now, I beseech You, O LORD. O LORD, I beseech You, send now prosperity.

3Mark 11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

Matt. 21:10 And when He had come into 1Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, "Who is this?"

1Mark 11:11 And Jesus entered Jerusalem, and into the temple. And when He had looked around on all things, and it was now the evening, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Matt. 21:11 And the multitude said, "This is Jesus the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.

The Cleansing of the Temple

Parallel:  Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45,46

Matt. 21:12 And Jesus went into the 1temple of God, and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of those who sold doves,

1Mark 11:16 And would not allow any man to carry any vessel through the temple.

Matt. 21:13 And said to them, "It is 1written, 'My house will be called a 2house of prayer,' but you have made it a 'den of thieves.' "

1Isaiah 56:7 "Even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar. For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people."

2Jeremiah 7:11 "Is this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it," says the LORD.

Matt. 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.

Matt. 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were moved with indignation.

Matt. 21:16 and 1said to Him, "Do you hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes.  Have you never read, 'Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings you have perfected praise?' "

1Mark 11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the multitude was astonished at His doctrine.

Matt. 21:17 And He left them, and went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged there.

Jesus Caused a Fig Tree to Wither

Parallel:  Mark 11:12-14

Matt. 21:18 Now in the morning as He returned to the city, He was 1hungry.

1Mark 11:12 And on the morrow, when they had come from Bethany, He was hungry.

Matt. 21:19 And when He saw a 1fig tree in the way, He came to it, and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, "Let no fruit grow on you ever again," And immediately the fig tree 2withered away.

1Mark 11:13,14 And seeing afar off a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He could find anything on it. And when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the time for figs. And Jesus answered and said to it, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And His disciples heard it.

2Mark 11:20 And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

Lessons From Withered Fig Tree

Parallel:  Mark 11:20-24

Matt. 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree 1wither away so soon?"

1Mark 11:21 And Peter remembered and said to Him, "Master, behold, the fig tree which You cursed has withered."

Matt. 21:21 Jesus answered and said to them, "Verily I say to you, if you have 1faith, and doubt not, you will not only do what is done to the fig tree, but also if you will say to this mountain, 'Be removed, and be cast into the sea;' it will be done.

1Mark 11:22,23 And Jesus answering them, "Have faith in God. For verily I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, 'Be removed, and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things which he says will come to pass, he shall have whatever he says."

Matt. 21:22 And all things, whatever you 1ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."

1John 14:13 And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

1John 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

1James 1:5,6 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.

Authority of Jesus Questioned

Parallel:  Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8

Matt. 21:23 And when He had come into the temple, the 1chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what 2authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?"

1Mark 11:27 And they come again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders came to Him.

1Luke 20:1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes confronted Him with the elders,

2Mark 11:28 And say to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?"

Matt. 21:24   And Jesus answered and said to them, "I also will 1ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

1Mark 11:29 And Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you one question; answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things."

Matt. 21:25 The 1baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven, or from men?" And they reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'from heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why did you not believe him?'

1John 1:29-34 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, after me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me. And I knew Him not; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water." And John bore record, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He abode upon Him. And I knew Him not, but He who sent me to baptize with water, said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the same is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen, and bare record that this is the Son of God."

Matt. 21:26 But if we say, 'Of men;' we fear the people, for all hold John as a 1prophet."

1Luke 20:6 But if we say, "Of men," all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

1Mark 11:32 But if we say, "Of men"— they feared the people, for all held that John, was a prophet indeed.

Matt. 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, 1"We cannot tell." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

1Mark 11:33 And they answered and said to Jesus, "We cannot tell." And Jesus answering said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

Parable of Two Sons

Parallel:  None

Matt. 21:28 But what do you think? A certain man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, 'Son, go work today in my vineyard.'

Matt. 21:29 He answered and said, 'I will not,' but afterward he repented, and went.

Matt. 21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, 'I go, sir,' and went not.

Matt. 21:31 Which of the two did the will of his father?"  They say to Him, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Verily I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots enter the 1kingdom of God before you.

1Matthew 16:18,19 And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Matt. 21:32 For John came to you in the way of 1righteousness, and you did not believed him, but the publicans and the harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward repent, that you might believe him.

1Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said to him, "Allow it to be so now; for thus it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him.

Parable: Wicked Vinedressers

Parallel:  Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19

Matt. 21:33 Hear another 1parable: There was a certain householder, who planted a vineyard, and placed a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to vinedressers, and went into a far country.

1Mark 12:1 And He began to speak to them in parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and dug a place for the wine vat, and built a tower. And he let it out to vinedressers, and went into a far country.

1Luke 20:9 Then began He to speak to the people this parable; "A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time."

Matt. 21:34 And when the time for the fruit drew near, he 1sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive of its fruit.

1Mark 12:2 And at the season he sent to the vinedressers a servant, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedresser.

1Luke 20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him, and sent him away empty.

Matt. 21:35 And the vinedressers took his servants, and 1beat one, and killed one, and stoned another.

1Mark 12:3 And they caught him and beat him and sent him away empty.

Matt. 21:36 Again, he 1sent other servants more than the first, and they did to them likewise.

1Mark 12:4,5 And again he sent to them another servant, and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated. And again he sent another, and him they killed, and many others, beating some, and killing some.

1Luke 20:11 And again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

Matt. 21:37 But last of all he sent to them his 1son, saying, 'They will reverence my son.'

1Mark 12:6 Therefore still having one son, his beloved; finally he sent him to them, saying, "They will reverence my son."

Matt. 21:38 But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and seize his inheritance.'

Matt. 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.

Matt. 21:40 Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?"

Matt. 21:41 They say to Him, "He will miserably 1destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard to other vinedressers, who will render him the fruits in their seasons."

1Luke 20:16  "He will come and destroy these vinedressers, and will give the vineyard to others." And when they heard it, they said, "God forbid."

Matt. 21:42 Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the 1Scriptures,  'The 2stone which the builders rejected, has become the head of the corner. This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?'

1Psalms 118:22,23 The stone which the builders refused has become the head cornerstone. This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

1Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily."

2Acts 4:10,11 Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him does this man stand here before you whole. This is the "stone which was rejected by you the builders, which has become the head of the corner."

21 Peter 2:6,7 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him shall not be confounded. To you therefore who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,"

Matt. 21:43 Therefore I say to you, the 1kingdom of God will be 2taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth its fruits.

2Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold, and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first, but since you put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles."

Matt. 21:44 And whoever will fall on this 1stone will be broken, but on whomever it falls, it will 2grind him to powder."

11 Corinthians 3:11 For no other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone,

2John 8:24 I said therefore to you, that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.

Matt. 21:45 And when the 1chief priests and Pharisees had heard His parables, they perceived that He spoke of them.

1Luke 20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on Him, and they feared the people. For they perceived that He had spoken this parable against them.

Matt. 21:46 But when they 1sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

1Luke 20:20 And they watched Him, and sent forth spies, who pretended to be righteous men, that they might take hold of His words, that they might deliver Him to the power and authority of the governor.

CHAPTER 22

Parable of Great Wedding Supper

Similar:  Luke 14:15-24

Matt. 22:1 And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables, and said,

Matt. 22:2  "The 1kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage

Matt. 22:3 and sent forth his servants to call those who were bidden to the wedding, and they would not come.

Matt. 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are bidden, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the marriage."

Matt. 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise.

Matt. 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and treated them spitefully, and killed them.

Matt. 22:7 But when the king heard about this, he was angry, and he sent out his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Matt. 22:8 Then said he to his servants, "The wedding is ready, but those who were bidden were not worthy.

Matt. 22:9 Go you therefore into the highways, and as many as you find, invite them to the marriage."

Matt. 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

Matt. 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.

Matt. 22:12 And he said to him, "Friend, how did you come in here not having on a wedding garment?" And he was speechless.

Matt. 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, "Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be 1weeping and gnashing of teeth."

1Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1Matthew 25:30 And cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matt. 22:14 For many are called, but 1few are chosen."

1Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to life, and few there be who find it.

Pharisees:  What About Tribute to Caesar?

Parallel:  Mark 12:13-17; Luke 20:20-26

Matt. 22:15 Then went the 1Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle Him in His talk.

1Mark 12:13 And they send to Him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch Him in His words.

Matt. 22:16 And they 1sent out to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Master, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth, neither care You for any man, for You regard not the person of men.

1Luke 20:20 And they watched Him, and sent forth spies, who pretended to be righteous men, that they might take hold of His words, so that they might deliver Him to the power and authority of the governor.

Matt. 22:17 Tell us therefore, what do You think?  Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?"

Matt. 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you tempt Me, you hypocrites?

Matt. 22:19 Show Me the tribute money." And they brought to him a penny.

Matt. 22:20 And He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?"

Matt. 22:21 They say to him, "Caesar's." Then said He to them, "Render therefore to 1Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

1Romans 13:1-7 Let every soul be subject to the higher powers. For there is no power except from God, and the powers that exist are ordained of God. Therefore whoever resists the power, resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Do you want then to be unafraid of the authorities? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath upon him who does evil. Therefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. For because of this you pay tribute, for they are God's ministers, attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Matt. 22:22 When they had heard these words, they 1marveled, and left Him, and went their way.

1Luke 20:26 And they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer, and held their peace.

Sadducees and the Resurrection

Parallel:  Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-40

Matt. 22:23 The same day the 1Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

1Luke 20:27 Then came to Him certain of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection; and they asked Him,

1Acts 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

Matt. 22:24 saying, "Master, 1Moses said that, if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother.

1Mark 12:19 Master, Moses wrote to us, if a man's brother dies, and leaves his wife behind, and leaves no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.

1Deuteronomy 25:5 If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead man shall not marry outside to a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in to her, take her to be his wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.

Matt. 22:25 Now there were with us 1seven brothers. The first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife to his brother.

Mark 12:20 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife; and dying he left no seed.

Matt. 22:26 Likewise the second also, and the third, to the seventh.

Matt. 22:27 And last of all the woman died also.

Matt. 22:28 Therefore in the 1resurrection whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her."

1Mark 12:23 Therefore in the resurrection when they shall rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as wife.

Matt. 22:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "You do 1err, not knowing the Scriptures, or the power of God.

1Luke 20:34-36 And Jesus answering said to them, "The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that other world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels; and are children of God, being children of the resurrection."

Matt. 22:30 For in the resurrection they 1neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of God in heaven.

1Mark 12:25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels who are in heaven.

Matt. 22:31 But concerning the resurrection of the 1dead, have you not read that which was 2spoken to you by God, saying,

1Mark 12:26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage how God spoke to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?"

1Luke 20:37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed in the passage at the bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. For He is not a God of the dead but of the living, for all who live to Him.

2Exodus 3:6 Moreover He said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

2Exodus 3:15 Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name for ever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'"

Matt. 22:32 "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?  God is not the God of the dead, but of the 1living.

1Luke 20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him.

Matt. 22:33 And when the multitude 1heard this, they were astonished at His doctrine.

1Luke 20:39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, "Master, You have spoken well."

Scribes and the First Commandment?

Parallel:  Mark 12:28-34

Matt. 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that He had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

Matt. 22:35 Then 1one of them, who was a lawyer, asked Him a question, tempting Him, and saying,

1Luke 10:25-28 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tested Him, saying, "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?" And he answering said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And He said to him, "You have answered rightly; this do, and you shall live."

Matt. 22:36  "Master, 1which is the great commandment in the law?

1Mark 12:28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"

Matt. 22:37 Jesus said to him, 1"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.

1Mark 12:29,30 And Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord. And you shall love the Lord your God with all thy heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment."

1Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created.

Matt. 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Matt. 22:39 And the second is like it, 'You shall love your 1neighbor as yourself."

1Luke 10:25-37 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tested Him, saying, "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?" And he answered and said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And He said to him, "You have answered rightly; this do, and you will live." But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" And Jesus answered and said, "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he came to the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever you spend more, when I come again, I will repay you.' Now which of these three, do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then said Jesus to him, "You go, and do likewise."

1James 2:8 If you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well;

Matt. 22:40 On these two 1commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

1Mark 12:31 And the second like it is this, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."  There is no other commandment greater than these.

1Mark 12:34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that, no one dared  ask Him any question.

How Can David Call Descendent Lord?

Parallel:  Mark 12:35-37; Luke 20:41-44

Matt. 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

Matt. 22:42 saying, "What do you think about Christ? Whose Son is He?" They say to Him, "The 1Son of David."

1Matthew 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matt. 22:43 He said to them, "How then does David in Spirit call Him 1Lord, saying,

1Psalms 110:1 The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

Matt. 22:44 'The Lord said to my Lord, sit You at My 1right hand, until I make Your 2enemies Your footstool?'

1Matthew 26:64 Jesus said to him, "You have said, nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."

1Mark 16:19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down on the right hand of God.

1Acts 2:29-35 "Men and brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne. He seeing this before, spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, to which we are all witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this, which you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he said himself, "The LORD said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand, until I make your foes your footstool.'"

21 Corinthians 15:25,26 For He must reign, until He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

Matt. 22:45 If David then calls Him Lord, how is He his son?"

Matt. 22:46 And no man was able to answer Him a word, neither dared any man from that day forth ask Him any questions.

CHAPTER 23

Woe to Scribes and Pharisees

Parallel: Mark 12:38-40; Luke 11:37-54; 20:45-47

Matt. 23:1 Then 1spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to His disciples,

1Mark 12:38 And He said to them in His doctrine, "Beware of the scribes, who love to go around in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,

Matt. 23:2 saying, "The scribes  and the 1Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.

1Mark 12:40 Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.

1Luke 11:37-54 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee invited Him to dine with him. And He went in, and sat down to eat. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. You fools, did not He who made the outside make that which is inside also? But rather give alms of such things as you have; and, then all things are clean to you. But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the other undone. Woe unto you, Pharisees! For you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are as which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them." Then answered one of the lawyers, and said to Him, "Master, in saying this You reproach us also." And He said, "Woe to you also, you lawyers! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to be bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. Truly you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers. For they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will slay and persecute,' that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say to you, it shall be required of this generation. Woe to you, lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You entered not in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered." And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to provoke Him to speak of many things, lying wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say so that they might accuse Him.

Matt. 23:3 Therefore whatever 1they bid you to observe, that observe and do, but you do not do after their works; for they say, and do not.

1Matthew 15:1-6 Then scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem, came to Jesus saying, "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread." But He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and mother;' and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.'  But you say, 'Whoever will say to his father or his mother, "Whatever you may have received from me, it is a gift dedicated to the temple," and honor not his father or his mother, with it. Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition."

Matt. 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and heavy to bare, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Matt. 23:5 But all their works they do to be seen of men. They make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments.

Matt. 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

Matt. 23:7 and greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

Matt. 23:8 But you are not to be called, "Rabbi," for one is your Master, even Christ, and you are all  brothers.

Matt. 23:9 And call no man your 1father upon the earth; for one is your Father, who is in heaven.

1Ephesians 6:2 Honor your father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

Matt. 23:10 Neither are you to be called masters; for one is your Master, even Christ.

Matt. 23:11 But he who is 1greatest among you will be your servant.

1Matthew 20:26 But it will not be so among you, but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister,

Matt. 23:12 And whoever will 1exalt himself will be abased; and he who will humble himself will be exalted.

1John 13:13-15 You call Me Master and Lord; and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example that you also should do as I have done to you.

Matt. 23:13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you 1neither go in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering to go in.

1John 9:22 His parents spoke these words, because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already, that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

1John 12:42 Nevertheless many even among the chief rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue,

Matt. 23:14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you 1devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer. Therefore you will receive greater damnation.

1Mark 12:40 Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.

1Luke 20:47 Who devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers. The will receive greater condemnation.

Matt. 23:15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Matt. 23:16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, "Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!"

Matt. 23:17 You fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

Matt. 23:18 And, whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

Matt. 23:19 You fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Matt. 23:20 Therefore whoever swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it.

Matt. 23:21 And whoever swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it.

Matt. 23:22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by Him who sits on it.

Matt. 23:23 1Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith.  These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

1Luke 11:42 But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the other undone.

Matt. 23:24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Matt. 23:25 Woe to you, scribes and 1Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but inside they are full of extortion and excess.

1Luke 11:39,40 And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. You fools, did not He who made the outside make that which is inside also?"

Matt. 23:26 You blind Pharisee, 1cleanse first that which is inside the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

1Luke 11:41 But rather give alms of such things as you have; then all things are clean to you.

Matt. 23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed 1tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

1Luke 11:44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are as graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.

Matt. 23:28 Even so you also 1outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

11 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Matt. 23:29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,

Matt. 23:30 and say, "If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets."

Matt. 23:31 Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the children of those who killed the prophets.

Matt. 23:32   Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

Matt. 23:33 You serpents, you generation of 1vipers, how can you escape the condemnation of hell?

1Acts 28:3-6 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, a viper came out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging on his hand, they said among themselves, "No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live." But he shook off the creature into the fire, and felt no harm. However they were expecting that he would swell up, or suddenly fall down dead; but after they had waited a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Matt. 23:34 Therefore, behold, I send to you 1prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and some of them you will 2kill and crucify, and some of them you will 3scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city,

1Luke 11:49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, "I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will slay and persecute,"

2Acts 7:59.60 And they stoned Stephen, as he was calling upon God, and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not lay this sin to their charge." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

32 Corinthians 11:24,25 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;"

Matt. 23:35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous 1Abel to the blood of 2Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you slew between the temple and the altar.

1Genesis 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother, and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

1Luke 11:51 From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

2Zechariah 1:1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD to Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

22 Chronicles 24:20,21 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, "Thus says God, 'Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has also forsaken you.'" And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

Matt. 23:36 Verily I say to you, all these things will come on this generation.

Jesus Weeps Over Jerusalem

Parallel:  Luke 13:34,35

Matt. 23:37 O 1Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets, and stone those who are sent to you, how often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, but you would not!

1Luke 19:41 And when he had come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it,

Matt. 23:38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

Matt. 23:39 For I say to you, you will not see Me again, until you will say, 1'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord."

1Psalms 118:26 Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

1Matthew 21:9 And the multitudes who went before, and those who followed, cried, saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!' Hosanna in the highest."

1Luke 19:38 Saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!"

The Temple Will Be Destroyed

Parallel: Mark 13:1,2; Luke 21:5,6

Matt. 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the 1temple, and His disciples came to Him to show Him the buildings of the temple.

1Luke 21:5 And as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts, He said,

1Mark 13:1 And as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, "Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!"

Matt. 24:2 And Jesus said to them, Do you see all these things? Verily I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

Signs of Time/End of Age

Parallel:  Mark 13:3-13; Luke 21:7-19

Matt. 24:3 And as He sat upon the Mount of Olives, the 1disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the world?"

1Mark 13:3,4 And as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?"

1Luke 21:7 And they asked Him, saying, "Master, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to come to pass?"

Matt. 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Take heed that no man deceives you.

Matt. 24:5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am Christ,' and will 1deceive many.

1Luke 21:8 And He said, "Take heed that you be not deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am Christ, and the time draws near.' Therefore do not go after them."

Matt. 24:6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of war.  See to it that you are not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Matt. 24:7 For 1nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines, and pestilences, and 2earthquakes, in various places.

1Mark 13:8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.

2Luke 21:11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs from heaven.

Matt. 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Matt. 24:9 Then will they 1deliver you up to be afflicted, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake.

1Mark 13:9 But take heed to yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues, and you will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them.

1Luke 21:12 But before all these, they will lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, and you will be brought before kings and rulers for My name's sake.

1Mark 13:11 But when they arrest you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand or premeditate what you will speak.  But whatever is given to you in that hour, speak that, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

Matt. 24:10 And then many will be offended, and will 1betray and hate one another.

1Luke 21:16 And you will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends, and some of you they will put to death.

Matt. 24:11 And many false prophets will rise, and deceive many.

Matt. 24:14 And this 1gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.

1Matthew 28:19,20 Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.

1Mark 16:15,16 And He said to them, "Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."

1Colossians 1:23 If you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which you have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven, of which I Paul was made a minister.

Destruction of Jerusalem

Matt. 24:15 Therefore when you shall 1see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by 2Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place—whoever reads, let him understand—

1Luke 21:20 And when you see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that her desolation is near.

2Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. And on the wing of abominations He shall make it desolate. Even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

2Daniel 11:31 And forces shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination that makes desolate.

2Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Matt. 24:16 Then let those who are 1in Judea flee to the mountains.

Matt. 24:19 And 1woe to those who are with child, and to those who give suck in those days!

1Luke 21:23 But woe to those who are with child, and to those who nurse babies, in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

Matt. 24:20 But pray that your flight may not be in the winter, nor on the Sabbath day,

Matt. 24:21 for then there will be great 1tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time; no, nor ever shall be.

Matt. 24:23 Then if any man will say to you, 'Lo, here is Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it.

Matt. 24:24 For there will arise 1false christs, and false prophets, who will show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if it were possible, the very elect.

1Mark 13:22 For false christs and false prophets will rise, and will show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

Matt. 24:25 Behold, I have 1told you before.

1Mark 13:23 But take heed; behold, I have foretold you all things beforehand.

Matt. 24:26 Wherefore if they will say to you, 'Behold, He is in the desert!' do not go forth, or 'behold, He is in the secret chambers,' do not believe it.

Matt. 24:27 For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west, so will also the coming of the Son of Man be.

Matt. 24:28 For wherever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Coming of the Son of Man

Parallel:  Mark 13:24-27; Luke 21:25-28

Matt. 24:29 Immediately 1after the tribulation of those days will the sun be darkened, and the moon will not give her light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

12 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; the earth and also the works that are in it will be burned up.

1Hebrews 1:12 And as a mantle You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.

1Revelation 20:11 And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them.

Matt. 24:30 And then will 1appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will 2see the Son of Man coming in the 3clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

1Mark 13:26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

2Matthew 7:13 Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be who go in by it.

31 Thessalonians 4:15-17 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord will not prevent those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Matt. 24:31 And He will send His 1angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

12 Thessalonians 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,

1Matthew 13:41 The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who do iniquity;

Parable of the Fig Tree

Parallel:  Mark 13:28-31; Luke 21:29-33

Matt. 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree. When its branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

Matt. 24:33 Even so, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

Matt. 24:34 Verily I say to you, this generation will not pass, until all these things be fulfilled.

Matt. 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

No One Knows the Day or Hour of His Coming

Parallel:  Mark 13:32-37

Matt. 24:36 But of that day and hour no man, knows no, not the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

Matt. 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so will also the coming of the Son of Man be.

Matt. 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

Matt. 24:39 and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Matt. 24:40 Then will two be in the field: one will be taken, and the other left.

Matt. 24:41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and the other left.

Matt. 24:42 Watch therefore: for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.

Matt. 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken up.

Matt. 24:44 Therefore, you also be ready, for the Son of Man will come at an hour that you think not.

Faithful and Evil Servant

Parallel:  Luke 12:35-48

Matt. 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

Matt. 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes will find so doing.

Matt. 24:47 Verily I say to you, that he will make him ruler over all his goods.

Matt. 24:48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,'

Matt. 24:49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards,

Matt. 24:50 the lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

Matt. 24:51 and will cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

CHAPTER 25

Parable of Wise/Foolish Virgins

Parallel: None

Matt. 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to 1meet the bridegroom.

12 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

Matt. 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

Matt. 25:3 Those who were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them,

Matt. 25:4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

Matt. 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and 1slept.

11 Thessalonians 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Matt. 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!'

Matt. 25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their 1lamps.

1Luke 12:35  Let your loins be girded, and your lamps burning;

Matt. 25:8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'

Matt. 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, 'Not so; lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'

Matt. 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the 1door was shut.

1Luke 13:25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, "Lord, Lord, open to us," and He will answer and say to you, "I do not know where you are from!"

Matt. 25:11 Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, 1'Lord, Lord, open to us.'

1Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and in Your name have cast out devils, and in Your name done many wonderful works?' And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from Me, you who work iniquity.

Matt. 25:12 But he answered and said, 'Verily I say to you, I know you not.'

Matt. 25:13 Therefore 1watch, for you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man comes.

1Mark 13:35 Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house comes—at evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning—

1Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour no man, knows, no, not the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

Parable of the Talents

Parallel:  None

Compare Parable of Minas, Luke 19:11-27

Matt. 25:14 For the 1kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his servants, and delivered to them his goods.

1Matthew 16:18,19  And I say also to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Matt. 25:15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to each man according to his several 1ability. And straightway took his journey.

1Romans 12:4,5 For as we have many members in one body, and all members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Matt. 25:16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and gained five other talents.

Matt. 25:17 And likewise he who had received two, he also gained two more.

Matt. 25:18 But he who had received one went and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

Matt. 25:19 After a long time the lord of those servants returned, and reckoned with them.

Matt. 25:20 And so he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents.  Behold, I have 1gained beside them five talents more.

11 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that one be found faithful.

1Luke 12:43,44 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes will find so doing. Of a truth I say to you, that he will make him ruler over all that he has.

Matt. 25:21 His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant!  You have been 2faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.  Enter you into the joy of your lord.'

1Hebrews 12:1,2 Therefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Matt. 25:22 He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents.  Behold, I have gained besides them two other talents.'

Matt. 25:23 His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.  Enter you into the 1joy of your lord.'

Psalms 16:11 You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

Matt. 25:24 Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.

Matt. 25:25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth.  See there, you have what is yours.'

Matt. 25:26 His lord answered and said to him, 'You 1wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.

1Matthew 18:32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said to him, "O you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you begged me."

Matt. 25:27 Therefore you ought to have put my money with the exchangers, and then at my coming  I would have received my own with interest.

Matt. 25:28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

Matt. 25:29 For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who has not will be taken away even what he has.

Matt. 25:30 And cast the 1unprofitable servant into 2outer darkness there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

1Psalms 112:10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked shall perish.

2Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, "Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

2Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess to them, "I never knew you: depart from Me, you who work iniquity."

The Judgment Day

Parallel:  None

Matt. 25:31 When the Son of Man will 1come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then will He sit on the 2throne of His glory.

11 Thessalonians 4:14-18 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so also God will also bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord will not prevent those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus shall we ever be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

12 Thessalonians 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,

2Revelation 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, and the books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged from those things, which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged every one according to their works. And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Matt. 25:32 And before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.

Matt. 25:33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the 1goats on the left.

1John 8:24 I said therefore to you, that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.

Matt. 25:34 Then will the King say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, 1inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

1John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Matt. 25:35 For I was hungered, and you gave Me meat, I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in;

Matt. 25:36 naked, and you 1clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in 2prison, and you came to Me.

1James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

2Philippians 1:13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

Matt. 25:37 Then will the righteous answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You or thirsty, and gave You drink?

Matt. 25:38 When did we see You a stranger, and took You in, or naked, and clothe You?

Matt. 25:39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?'

Matt. 25:40 And the King will answer and say to them, 'Verily I say to you, inasmuch as you have done it to one of the 1least of these My brethren, you have done it to Me.'

1Mark 9:41 For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, verily I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

1Matthew 10:42 And whoever will give a drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you, he will in no wise lose his reward.

Matt. 25:41 Then will He say also to those on His left hand, 'Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into everlasting 1fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

1Matthew 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of this world.

1Matthew 13:42 And will cast them into a furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

12 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

Matt. 25:42 For I was hungry, and you gave me no meat, I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink;

Matt. 25:43 I was a stranger, and you did not take Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.'

Matt. 25:44 Then will they also answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You?'

Matt. 25:45 Then will He answer them, saying, 'Verily I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the 1least of these, you did not do it to Me.'

1Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors him has mercy on the poor.

Matt. 25:46 And these will go away into 1everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal 2life."

1Daniel 12:2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

2John 5:28,29 Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice, and will come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

2Acts 24:15 And I have hope toward God, which they themselves also cherish, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
